Great Moments In Advertising History
Although short descriptions of products could be seen in the newspapers of the 17th century, the real advertising phenomenon emerged in the 19th century, when its wheels started to spin. Advertising agencies, where experts in communication were employed, were a growing business, as manufacturers began to realize that they needed something distinctive, like a hallmark, in order to make their unique products to be considered the best. The increasingly crowded marketplace suddenly became too small for the wide variety of products available out there.
Throughout most of the 19th century, customers would buy their products in bulk. They take to the stores their own recipients into which goods like sugar, rice, coffee, molasses, and salt were bought all together. The advent of packaged goods would change marketing forever, as they started to use a box of salt, a bag of rice, and a pound of coffee. The brand name stuck on these packs meant the beginning of a new era.
Nevertheless, at the beginning of the 20th century, more and more manufacturers began to market their packaged goods under brands names, and this represented a major upturn in the history of advertisement. The technical developments of that time also had a major impact on the evolution of the ad. Advertising took advantage of the new mass media, using radio in the 1920s and television after 1950s to transmit commercial messages. Although, it showed signs of working effectively from the beginning of the century, it was only after the 1950s that consumers began to get more and more influenced by the need that ads created. After the two world wars they disposed of more and more income in order to respond to this need creation message of advertisers.
Advertising have not always been used to promote commercial products, but it also served as a propaganda tool. During World War I, the British used ads to convince its citizens to fight and to persuade the Americans to help them out. Ads as historical documents are extremely valuable as they infer social conditions which otherwise couldn’t have been known.
Nowadays, advertising is one of the most important businesses worldwide. Michael Schudson speaks about how advertising can reconfigure the world, by saying that: Advertising is capitalism’s way of saying I love you to itself.
